Replying to a comment on Sam Adams Boycott gaining momentum
Boston Beer is a little defensive - and it's no mystery why. Boston thinks that they are a "beer city" because of Sam Adams Beer, but they also know of Portland's reputation.
One of my professors at PSU told me that when he went to a bar in Boston, they barkeep was very proud of Boston's beer, and was anxious to tell a tourist all about how the selection would be better than he was used to, wherever he was from.
When this professor said, "I'm from Portland," the publican glumly replied, "Oh," and no more was heard about the local offerings.
Poor Boston.
