(to those who are confused: at a birthday party a few years ago, we set up a croquet course that included wickets stuck in the sides of trees)
I think you're right that the key to this game (aside from lots of booze, of course) is going to be to make a bunch of extra wickets and start the course out really easy and then have it get progressively harder.
