I think the 9/11 date is more coincidence in relation to the horrible events of September 11, 2001. According to this article at the Oregonian, the Mayor's birthday is Wednesday, September 12. The fact that the anouncement is occurring before his birthday tells me (in my faulty logic) that he wants to be rid of it before he celebrates. Certainly I wouldn't want the weightiest of weighty decisions hanging over my head during a birthday. That leads me (again with my faulty logic) to believe that he's going to retire. He can retire at peace and kick off the rest of his life (he turns 67) in style on the 12th.
Then again, it could be the other way around. After all, the opening deadline to file to run for offices is on Thursday.
