Jeff Merkley Reports Q4 Numbers; Shows Why He Can Beat Smith.

Jeff Merkley has the money, the grassroots support, and the progressive values to take down Gordon Smith in November and be an effective, honest Senator.

I have some hot, breaking news from my sources: Jeff Merkley's U.S. Senate campaign raised $619,000 in the 4th quarter of 2007 and has $528,000 on-hand heading into the election year. The campaign also reports 2009 individual donors, 1230 of which are Oregonians. The $913,000 that they've raised in just under five months seems like it destroys any other Oregon Senate challenger in two quarters of fund-raising (by comparison, in 2002 Bill Bradbury raised $562,00 through his 2nd quarter). The campaign starts 2008 with a healthy amount of funds-- every penny of which will be needed in the coming months as we gear up to send Gordon Smith packing.

Jeff Merkley, the Oregon House Speaker representing Portland, is vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Senator Gordon Smith in November. Smith, whose continued presence in D.C. enables the Republican minority to effectively block useful legislation from the Senate chamber, must be taken out. Why, you ask? Well let me tell you.

Smith's a partisan hack, and he's going to keep Oregon from having total representation as long as he's sitting in D.C. He claims to be a moderate, but he votes with George W. Bush 90% of the time. He's going to continue flip-flopping on the war, enabling Oregon's men and women to die in Iraq. He's going to continue to perpetuate environmental/economic disasters like the Klamath fish kill. He supports extreme right-wing judicial nominees. And then there's the ongoing domestic partnership struggle. The problem with Smith in this issue is that he hasn't done much of anything about it! It's a shame that he'll only pay lip service to such a fair, just cause. If you want to know more about the gory details, visit StopGordonSmith.com.

With his healthy fourth-quarter take, Jeff continues to show that he's the man to take on Smith in November. With the progressive positions Jeff advocates and his ability to raise big-league funds, Smith will have a hard time holding on. Unlike Smith, Jeff's got the progressive credentials and values to get the job done. In his time in office he has led the way on renewable resources, fighting bad payday lending, leading on domestic partnerships, working to pass real universal healthcare legislation, and working to build coalitions for Oregon's future. It's safe to say the most recent term in our legislature, with Jeff at the helm, was the most progressive and effective in years. Jeff's the real deal, and I'm proud to support him and to know that his campaign is taking off in a big way. With that in mind and with Jeff Merkley as our candidate, I wholly expect Oregon to turn even bluer in November.

Although Smith has over $4 million cash on-hand, Jeff Merkley's the man to take him down. He has the money and his fund-raising pace portends a bright 2008. He has the grassroots support. He has the right values. All he needs is our support and our votes to be the next Democratic Senator from Oregon. Indeed, we need more feisty progressives like Jeff in D.C., where he can work to craft good policy and stand up to the conservative machine.

If everyone puts their money where their mouths by donating to the campaign and lines up to do good, hard work, we can make this happen. We must make this happen. For us. For the future. For Oregon.

  • These are excellent fundraising numbers from team Merkley. Especially for a candidate with low name ID, the ability to frame the debate on the airwaves is crucial for election success. Setting the tone of debate on the airwaves is expensive but with fundraising like this Merkley is well on his way to making it a reality.

  • Interesting how you bring up the importance of getting on the airwaves.

Novick just released his first TV ad! It's clever, straightforward, and enjoyable. Take a look at

  • Here's an update from the Merkley campaign press release via a quote from Jeff:

"I’m profoundly grateful for the support we’ve received in just four short months. These are folks who believe, as I do, that we can only change Washington by changing the people we send there,” Merkley said. “For too long, Washington has been working in favor of the politicians and corporate special interests. And, unfortunately, Gordon Smith’s view of America begins and ends in a corporate boardroom.”

“As someone who grew up in Roseburg, the son of a mill worker and the first in my family to go to college, my view of America is entirely different,” Merkley said. “In the America I see, everyday Oregonians deserve protection from unfair trade deals, military veterans deserve full health care benefits, and middle class families deserve to come first for a change.”

  • According to the 2008 Senate Guru this haul "roughly triples the Q4 take of primary opponent Steve Novick."

    • How do we get invited to those debates he mentions?

      • First you have to file to run for senate. The filing deadline is March, so you have a bit of time. I'll support your bid, Dan.

        • Do I need support ahead of time? Or can I just show up and put my name on the list?

Also, that's not what I meant. I want to attend the debate, not debate in the debate.

  • Should just be able to show up.
