Wear Orange Today- Close Down Guantánamo
Attention Portland: please wear orange today to show your support for the ACLU's efforts to close down Guantánamo Bay in Cuba.
We all know the big-time constitution violation that Guantánamo has become, so I won't go on about either it or the Bush administration's atrocities. Instead, I'd ask you to join the ACLU and wear orange today to symbolize your desire to shut down that ghastly example of constitutional and human-rights abuse. From the ACLU website:
JANUARY 11, 2008, is the six-year anniversary of the first arrival of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay.On January 11, we are calling on everyone opposed to torture and indefinite detention to WEAR ORANGE to symbolize their sadness and disgust with the national shame that is Guantánamo Bay.
I'm wearing orange today because enough is enough and because there are certain rights which just should not be taken away. I've been actively opposed to Guantánamo for years, and today I restate that commitment.

But, to answer the implied question: I'm not sure why they chose orange...

'cause the prisoners there wear orange.
because nobody really wears orange in real life if they have a choice.
I'm not sure this plan was fully thought out.

Yeah, that's a fair guess. I still stand by my support, duh, but last night I had to scramble to see if I had something orange.

I'm apalled. I won't go through the riot act again, but this has to end. I'm for the immediate closure of the detention facility. This is just the beginning...
In order to end this practice, we need to create solidarity among not only our own people but those around us...
