Jeff Merkley: Don't Ask Don't Tell is "an unreasonable, counter productive policy."

Posted by Michael on January 09, 2008 at 9:45 p.m. in Politics, Oregon

Okay, full disclosure: I work for Mandate Media, the company that built Jeff Merkley's website. It's also no secret that I really like Jeff Merkley - and liked him even before he hired us.

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending one of his blogger-centric events. At it, I met a lot of fine folks in the Oregon blogosphere and got to have an intimate Q&A with the hopeful senator. It was a great forum the last time it happened and this time it was even better. Before you say it: yes, many in the crowd were already Merkley supporters - but that just means that the questions were harder so we could make damn sure that we were supporting the right candidate. I, for one, walked away satisfied. I even scribbled down a few choice quotes on a napkin.

Don't ask don't tell is "an unreasonable, counter-productive policy." Amen. I have many expletives to add that sentiment about don't ask don't tell, but I'm not as eloquent as Merkley. The look on his face as he said this gave me confidence that he would work hard on repealing it. That may be not worth a lot to some of you, but I walked away confident - and proud of my support for him.

A couple of other choice quotes: We "should start bringing [the troops] home today." And we "cannot have a permanent military base [in Iraq]." I guess it's kind of absurd that such a common sense convictions elicit such a strong response, but it's part of why Merkley is the man to bring down Gordon Smith. He's just the right man for the job.

  • Michael, Here here.. I concur. And it was good to meet you and other supporters of Jeff tonight. He answered the questions well. Glad to see how quickly you were able to bring this on your blog.

    • It was a great event - nice meeting you!

One of the things I really liked was how random people came over and started paying attention. I hope Jeff does more events in public places like that.

  • I attended this event as well, and also thought it was a great event. I will be writing about this and another event scheduled for tomorrow evening.

I thought Merkley fielded a good range of questions well, and was glad have him conclusively put to rest the silly blather coming from some quarters in the left-leaning side blogsphere about his full support of equal rights for non-heterosexuals on the Federal level, including repealing DOMA and scraping DA/DT/DP.

He has a proven record of actually having pushed through getting non-heterosexual equal rights in Oregon, and is committed to doing the same on the Federal level.

  • I feel bad for missing the event, but I'm glad that such topics got discussed. Sounds like Jeff has the common sense, progressive values, and tenacity to take down the G-man in November.
