Better than a primary opponent? Gordon Smith might have a spoiler this November.

Meet Mary Starrett, a former commentator and talk show host in the Portland area. Most recently she made headlines by running for governor in 2006 - as the Constitution Party's candidate. She is currently the Constitution Party's National Political Communications Director. And the latest news about Ms. Starrett? She might be jumping into the 2008 Senate race.

For those who don't know, the Constitution Party "advocates a Bible-based platform which it claims to reflect original intent of the U.S. Constitution and the principles of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The party seeks "to restore American jurisprudence to its original Biblical common-law foundations." 1 - wikipedia Sound sort of Ron Paulish? Wait until you hear more about Starrett herself: she's anti-war, a 9/11 skeptic, anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-immigration, a global warming skeptic, and she also believes that shopping cards are a way for the government to track our spending. Oh, and she's a vegetarian. Our very own Oregonian Ron Paul! I heart her already. Wait, no, what's the opposite of heart?

It gets a bit better, though - in April, she was being recruited to run for the presidency. As in, White House. However, she didn't want to have anything to do with a presidential bid:

But channeling the spirit of Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman ("If drafted, I will not run; if nominated, I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve"), Starrett rejects any talk of a presidential campaign: She doesn't exactly recall her 2006 gubernatorial run with enough fondness to take a stab at presidential politics.

"Shoot me, just shoot me," Starrett says, "It's like asking a woman who just had a baby to have quintuplets."

Starrett, now working as a communications director for the national Constitution Party as well as executive director of the anti-abortion Oregonians for Life, likened her 2006 campaign to being punched "in the face by someone holding a roll of quarters."

Ouch. Yet, here she is, pondering a Senate run. While nothing has been confirmed, nothing has been denied, and she agrees that "Gordon Smith needs a spanking." While I could have lived the rest of my life without having that mental image, it is nice to see such dissatisfaction with Smith.

In her last race, the 2006 gubernatorial, she got 3.6% of the vote. That amount could make all of the difference in a tight race against Smith. Even if this all is just to get Smith to come home to the right and stop trying to pander to us damn liberals, I wish her the absolute best of luck.

  • I bet there are a fair number of people who would like to punch her in the face while holding a roll of quarters...

    • It's always reassuring to know that the peaceful people of the left are determined to express themselves with love.

God bless you all, I will pray for you.

      • Dan neither stated that he would himself like to punch her (and his silence on the topic tends to imply that he does not want to punch her) nor that other people should punch her. There's nothing unpeaceful about what he said, just making a joke based on her own words.
