How I Scared Jeff Merkley

Posted by Michael on December 16, 2007 at 3:24 p.m. in Politics, Oregon

I have a confession to make. I arrived at the Merkley/Tester event late. Why? This damn blog, that's why. I got too wrapped up in the mess that is the backend that I completely spaced what time it was. In fact, I was still wrapped up in it when I was walking through the door to MacTarnahan's Taproom. Even in my dazed and confused state, lines of code running over my eyes, it was easy to tell that the room was energized. Merkley was in the middle of giving a short fiery speech and the room was loving it. It was a good lead in for Tester, who took the energy in the room and ran with it. At one point, he divided the room in half and had one side shout "Jeff" and the other "Merkley." I admit to being a bit overzealous in my shouting, earning a couple of strange looks from my neighbors. But this isn't about my alienating a couple of Merkley supporters, this is about how I cornered Merkley and started ranting about how pie is going to save America.

You see, I got a bit excited at the event. It wasn't because of the delicious food, the good beer, or even the rousing speeches, though I'm sure all of those played a small part. The reason that this event was so great was that I got to see for the first time since the kickoff another large group of Merkley supporters. Seeing how strongly people supported Jeff, and how approachable, likable and sincere he was, it was clear that he could take on Gordon Smith and defeat him. It's a great group of people.

Of course, that's one of the main points of events like these - to energize the support base. While I think most people were already pretty gung-ho about Merkley coming in, I didn't see a single person that looked apathetic on the way out. The event worked. Part of it, of course, is just how great Merkley is. He even took it in stride when I approached him and started talking about Witigonen's pro-pie stance. I didn't get far enough along in my elevator pitch to propose that he set up a Senate Committee on Pro Pie Matters when he gets elected, unfortunately - I got distracted by his excellent responses to some serious question. I feel confident, however, that if he gets elected he'll be a great asset for Oregon and will be somebody that I will be proud to have once accosted about matters of national pastry importance.

  • Well, when he's Senator, you can harass his aides in the Portland office, lobbying them mysterious, delicious pies.

Now, here's a question: what pies are more the province of the Democratic party? Which ones are synonymous with the Republicans?

    • Blueberry and Cherry, of course

      • Simply not true. Pie transcends simple partisan divides and to put labels on them is belittling American values. You damn communist.

  • While we all want to get Gordon Smith out of office, don't forget about the primary. Steve Novick is an outstanding candidate, who in my opinion would be a better Senator than Jeff Merkley could be.

    • But could he beat Smith? On the most important issues, Merkley and Novick are fairly indistinguishable, so the real question of the primary is who can beat Smith.

      • And of course everybody thinks that their candidate has a better chance against Smith...
