Mobile browsing, or why I squint all the time

Do you have a fancy pants phone? I do. It provides me with the amazing ability to read the New York Times or Reuters online, regardless of what bathroom I'm in. I can check my email, send text messages, and if I'm feeling daring I might even make a phone call on it. My phone, unfortunately, runs Windows Mobile, which is Microsoft's gentle way of saying, "You can go and rot under a log in a ditch on fire for all I care about you." Apple's iPhone, however, is.. well... Apple-y and nice. Much like the Roomba, the iPhone could easily be a surrogate pet if you covered it in soft material and fed it every day. It could probably even guard your cat for you.

Techcrunch just reported that the browsing share for the iPhone is 0.09%, vs. 0.06% for Windows Mobile. Now, keep in mind that those stats are like that despite there only being about 1.4 million iPhones vs. 20 million phones with Windows Mobile. Of course, there are, I imagine, significant demographics; specifically, iPhone users are more likely to have more time on their hands to spend reading mobile Reuters/New York Times/Apple.com OVER AND OVER MAYBE THERE'S SOMETHING NEW while in the bathroom. Many Windows Mobile users probably very rarely use their browser not due to Microsoft's inherent hatred of them but because they get their phones primarily to sync with Outlook.

Another interesting thing has been the rash of iPhone clones on the market. With Verizon set to support Google's Android, we might even start seeing more of them. Perhaps pants-phone browsing will become less painful as time goes on. Personally, I would prefer a middle option between the iPhone and being brutally beaten by large men with sticks.

Credit to Susan for the lolroomba.

  • I'm using Sprint right now, and it's pretty decent. I have a Windows Mobile browser, however, and it's less than enthralling. An Iphone looks so pretty... and anything by Google has my attention, even on Verizon...

What networks do you guys use?
