Portland Holiday Ale Fest; or, All I Did This Weekend.
Happy Monday to you all! It certainly is blustery, but that's Portland for you. Although the sun rises (in theory) at 7:30, it's still mighty dark. But, rain or no, and regardless of wind, I had an excellent time at yesterday's Portland Holiday Ale Fest. I would have directed everyone to join me there, but it was more of a spur-of-the-moment decision.
What did I find at the ale fest? Drink-a-plenty, to be sure, but also a warm and seemingly weather-proof environment to enjoy tastes of specialty beers not usually found in your local supermarket. Indeed, such occasions are a chance for reflection on what qualities I appreciate in a fine beer. Me? I tend to enjoy a hoppier beer that's somewhat floral and aromatic, but that's just me. I also like a fine flavored porter or stout. Although I'm relatively new to the beer game, I figure it's not too soon to hone a fine appreciate for fine beer. We are Portland, after all.
In that light, did you make it out to the fest? If so, what were your impressions? If no, well, what sort of beer do you like?
On that note, did you all enjoy your weekend? Ready to get up and hit that work week squarely in the nose? Want something to blunt the edge? Me too. How about a nice ongoing (made up?) controversy regarding City Council candidate John Branam (that seems to be put to rest)? Or how about an article on how Congressman Earl Bluemenauer represents our city on the powerful Ways and Means committee? Or, heck, there's even time to talk about the ramifications of Hugo Chavez' narrow defeat at the Venezuelan polls. Not your style, or too much at this early hour? Well, in that case, I don't think there's anything I can do to help you beyond point you in this general direction.
Have a great morning, and I'll be back later with more fun!

Hey Jeff, been to the Green Dragon again lately? Last time I swung by there it looked heated but still absolutely absurdly crowded.

I loved the Baltic Porter, as well as the fine Scotch Ale that was on the left-most dispensary. I really enjoyed, however, the Holy Hops.
