Chavez Debacle Rolls On
The Chavez street naming is like the controversy that just will not die. Everyone agrees a street should be renamed, but no one can seem to figure out which street. Now, with 4th street having been proposed, the Chinese community is up in arms, since 4th runs through Chinatown. I can see how that might actually be a problem, as opposed to people expecting there be a street named Interstate near I-5.
Perhaps a better solution would be to foster and develop a focal point of Chicano culture, a community center, something that could bring Chicano and Latino people together in Portland. That would be a better honor to Cesar Chavez than a protracted fight to rename a street.
