San Francisco giving ID cards to all residents - even illegal ones

Posted by Michael on November 20, 2007 at 5:22 p.m. in Portland, Politics, News, Oregon

San Francisco, by a 10-1 vote, has become the largest city in America to give ID cards to all residents, including illegal aliens. From the article:

Residents will be able to obtain the resident cards by presenting photo identification and proof they live in the city, such as a utility bill. It was unclear if the new cards, which will be accepted at libraries and health clinics, will carry photos.

Such a move had been expected from San Francisco, which is famously liberal. Earlier this year, Mayor Gavin Newsom said he would not allow city officials and employees to assist immigration raids by federal authorities seeking up people who had committed crimes or disregarded deportation orders.

The article fails to mention the difficulty for some to get a photo ID in the first place, but at least it's a first step. Of course, I'm still not entirely sure what the point is. Anti-immigration folks are probably going to go nutso over this, though. It is to be expected out of San Francisco, which declared itself a Sanctuary City in 1989. Portland is also a sanctuary city, as are many others. It basically means that police and other officials can't ask about a person's immigration status.

Meanwhile, in Oregon, Kulongoski is busy tightening the requirements on getting a drivers license but at least offering another license for people who can't meet the requirements of the real license. Eliot Spitzer, in New York, tried to give illegal immigrants drivers license but faced such opposition (in a large part from Democrats, sadly) that he had to drop the plan. Meanwhile, people are upset with Kulongoski being too harsh in his plan to do a similar thing. Funny how the east-west divide works sometimes.
