Habbo: Yet another thing to hate on the internet
Ever heard of Habbo? I certainly hadn't until I read a Techcrunch article about a Dutch teen that is under arrest for stealing fake furniture and putting it into his fake room.
Through phishing sites, this Dutch 17-year old snagged usernames and passwords to Habbo users' accounts and then (apparently) transferred furniture from those accounts to his own. You see, in Habbo, you actually pay real money for fake credits to buy fake furniture for your fake rooms.
You know what the worse part is? Habbo has 6 million unique visitors every month. How did we evolve out of the trees again?
Back when I was this kid's age, I was trying to get StarCraft to do multiplayer with my friends via a null modem cable. These days, people are sitting on their browser at a Flash game where they watch fake representations of themselves interact with other fake representations of other people. Is our society truly that desperate and bored? (As Facebook has clearly pointed out, yes.)
This guy should get life in prison, I say. Not for his crime, of course, but for playing Habbo in the first place. I can't say that it would be much of a punishment though, considering he clearly already had no life to speak of.
