Wyden, on paternity leave, sucker punched by Harry Reid

Posted by Michael on October 31, 2007 at 2:29 p.m. in Politics, News, Oregon

As you all hopefully know, on October 26 the Wyden family had twins. Ava Rose Wyden and William Peter Wyden were born at OHSU here in Portland, Oregon.

What you probably didn't know is that Harry Reid, Bush's eunuch-in-waiting, used the opportunity of Wyden being on paternity leave to confirm a new assistant Interior secretary. This might not have been a big deal except Wyden was the main opposition to this man's appointment.

Wyden's absence allowed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to schedule a vote on Laverty's nomination, despite a hold Wyden had placed on Laverty because of concerns about ethics violations at the Interior Department.

Of course, the real story isn't that Laverty is a questionable choice (though he is). It's not even that Harry Reid yet again completely caved to Bush, which is becoming an all too familiar tale. It's that Reid went out of his way to go around an upstanding Democratic senator who had legitimate concerns. This is yet another example of Reid ignoring a hold and just going along, doing whatever the Administration wants.

What. A. Jackass.

Do you remember after the 2006 elections when everybody was so excited about the Democratic tide sweeping the elections? Remember how we thought we were going to get out of Iraq, get some health care in place, start to catch up to the rest of the industrialized world? Remember that optimism?

Yeah, Harry Reid just shat all over that. AGAIN.

Now, I have more lenience than most for political games. I understand that there are complex maneuvers that have to take place in order to get things accomplished. In this case, however, Harry Reid's politicking apparently consists of not standing up and fighting, disrespecting his fellow Democratic senators, and providing some pretty dubious "leadership".

Wyden, it seems, is one of the few remaining senators with any spine at all. Too bad his efforts are being hamstrung by our own side.

Shame on Harry Reid. Shame.

  • Sadly democrats are so myopic that they can't see what independent thinkers have known for years. Niether party is capable of leading and are so riddled with corruption that one party being in power is little different than the other.

BTW the rest of the industrialized world is where it is because our military protected them mostly free of charge during the cold war and rebuilt them at the end of the second world war. If you think we are so far behind them why are you still living here?

    • Wow. That really is a distorted world view you have there. The only industrialized countries in which we have had a sizable pressence since WWII have been Germany and Japan and the only countries we appreciably rebuilt were Germany and Japan (which we also happened to destroy), plus we did all of it because it was good for us. Believe it or not, Europe would have survived the Cold War without us.

The bottom line is, we are behind several countries in the Human Development Index, many (37) countries in life expectancy, quite a few in infant mortality), homicide, etc. etc. The point, as Michael I belive was trying to say, we thought the Democrats were going to work on some of this stuff, but have done nothing. Saying we should move elsewhere is a non-argument. Don't you want a better country for yourself and your children?

  • not sure about you, but compromise is a virtue in my opinion. I don't know anything about this Laverty but if Reed sees nessesary to bargain with the GOP, hopefully it is for something previous or in the future that he has strong feelings about. if wyden had legitimate concerns, they should be heard, but what do you expect?
