DVD-Burning Kiosks Coming to a Walgreens Near You

Posted by James on October 28, 2007 at 1:01 p.m. in Technology

In a widely ignored press release, the DVD Copy Control Association, the organization responsible for the Content Scramble System (CSS) used to encrypt commercial DVDs announced that it was licensing their technology to allow third-party businesses and consumers burn copy-protected DVDs via kiosks or at home. Walgreen/CVS announced they would be introducing such kiosks in months.

This is probably the one thing the movie industry has done recntly that has in any way made sense. Without tying up inventory, stores can offer a gigantic selection of movies, including ones usually not available anywhere. Meanwhille, consumers will be able to (legally) download and burn movies that play on any DVD player. Current download services, such as Amazon's can only be played from the hard drive.

  • It reminds me of the $1 DVD rental kiosks in McDonalds and whatnot (at least, the one near PSU...). I wonder how well those do. Come to think of it, the one in PSU is a great idea - all those damn college students.

    • Safeways down here have those as well. That on its own is a pretty bright idea, but the selection is horrible.
