Kroger attacks polluters; also, Portland is REALLY polluted.
John Kroger, candidate for Oregon Attorney General, has pointed on his website that Portland is the third most polluted city in America according to BusinessWeek. According to the article, Portland has approximately 1 contaminated site for every 34 people, totaling 62,466 total (which puts us at 7th). We have 20,655 leaking storage tanks, 1st in the nation, and 10 corrective action reports (17th). The Willy Weak also covers this.
Kroger claims that this is because "We put tough environmental laws on the books, but we don’t enforce them aggressively. Instead of holding polluters accountable, we slap them on the wrist."
I honestly had no idea that Portland was really all that polluted. Of course, many other sources put Portland very high up there in terms of sustainability and greenness. Are we simply suffering from a bad legacy? Regardless, work needs to be done to clean this up. While I hope Kroger and Macpherson both make this a hot issue in this election, I want to see some solid movement in the City candidates towards resolving this issue - is this actually an issue about punishing polluters or is it cleaning up our past?
Another disclaimer: I work for the firm that built Macpherson's campaign site but I speak only for myself.
