'Tis the Season (for contributions)
I'm politically active. It's like being sexually active, except less fun, lasts longer, and there are more diseases. Part of being politically active is that I get on a lot of mailing lists. After all, I want to support the campaigns of the candidates I like so that they can get elected and we can see some real change (or maybe so I can just feel like I'm part of something, but who's counting). The most basic thing that politicians want you to do online is to sign up for their email lists. This is so they can cheaply and easily send out relevant information about what they're doing and keep you up to date, because the media certainly isn't going to do that. Also, they want money. Lots of money. If any of you have signed up to a list or donated to a candidate lately, you've probably noticed that it has no become the season for giving. Specifically, for you to give to them. That's right kids, it's the end of the quarter and campaigns are making that big push to get enough money to make other candidates feel embarrassed about themselves in the shower.
There are a lot of good candidates and campaigns out there to which you should probably be donating money. I fully support giving money. But do they really have to email me so goddam much?
It seems like every campaign in the world right now is doing a countdown until the end of the quarter (this Sunday). "Just five more days until the end of the quarter! Let's see how much money we can raise!" "Just 110 days until the Iowa Caucus! We need your support to buy lawn signs!" The list goes on. I don't mind the list. I mind that every item on the list deserves its own damn email.
Look, I'm a busy guy. After all, I have blogging to do! I don't care about why the candidate wants me to give them money. At the very most, I'll give the subject a brief glance before trashing it. I blame my generation and our short attention span. The more I get emailed by a campaign the less I pay attention. Am I alone in this? Do you people actually read the campaign emails?

Best incentive to give: "If you donate, we won't bother you again for a while!"

You get on the email list, so they can send you emails to get you to give them money, so they can send more marketing material?
