IBM takes a shot across the bow at Microsoft

IBM Lotus Symphony is an obvious attack on MS Office

Ars Technica has a bit up about IBM's recent Lotus Symphony release - a free download, based on OpenOffice.

Now that they've teamed up with Sun Microsystems (also see CEO Jonathan Schwartz's blog), there could be some real programming effort and marketing money in the partnership.

I'm sure Microsoft is planning to fight back.

  • IBM usually does absolutely amazing stuff, I'm looking forward to trying this out. Some of their concepts are just insane.

  • Poking around on Jonathan's blog, I've discovered that the Mexican Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is the official flying mammal of Texas. What's the official flying mammal of Oregon?

  • As a very happy Open Office user, is there anything new in the Lotus product that would make me want to switch?
