Putin and the Big One
Putin, the president of Russia (which I'm sure you all knew) made major news twice today. The first was when he appointed a nobody to be his replacement prime minister (a post that he occupied before becoming president when Yeltsin choose him as his successor) and the second was when he tested the Father of All Bombs, a conventional bomb with as much destructive power as a nuclear warhead without any of the fallout issues. It's a pretty powerful device. Best quote about it?
"The main destruction is inflicted by an ultrasonic shockwave and an incredibly high temperature," the reports said. "All that is alive merely evaporates." (from Reuters)
All that is alive merely evaporates.
That's brutal.
But is this the beginning of a new arms race? Since the weapon doesn't violate any treaties, and isn't a new type of technology, unlikely. Russia was clear to proclaim that starting another arms race wasn't their intent (probably because we kicked their ass in the last one - GO TEAM USA!). Of course, on top of all of the other Cold War era military maneuvering that Putin has been doing, one has to wonder.
Luckily, at Witigonen, we know the real answer behind all the posturing:
Putin is preparing for the inevitable zombie and/or martian invasion(s). He's just trying to protect the planet. That quote was probably originally meant to be "All that is alive, or undead, or alien, merely evaporates." I'm sure it was just a translation error.
What are your thoughts on Putin? Are we in for another Cold War?

Comments from site editors have a darker background than comments from everybody else.I should have a prominent role in preparing for any Zombie invasion. I've read both Max Brooks books, and I've watched all of the George Romero movies dozens of times.
Not that those will save you, however. In a real emergency, we'd all most likely just be devoured anyway.
As for Putin and Russia, I've never been sure what to think of the man or his policy. So, at parties when he comes up, I usually just nod softly and ask, "Well, what do you think of the man?"

What can one say about a man that looks like this?

He looks absolutely sinister.
And, without a shirt on, he's somewhat buff in that older-middle-aged-guy sort of way.

I figured out the naming a nobody to be PM.
He's pulling an inverse Bush-Cheney. Putin figures they'd never poison him when they've got an incompetent stooge in the on-deck circle.

I think you're right. I found a picture of the new prime minister and Putin:
