Mayor Potter to anounce re-election plans next Monday

Mayor Potter will announce his plans this coming Monday, September 10, at 11:30 a.m.

I've just received word from my sources that Mayor Tom Potter will formally announce his "re-election plans" this coming Monday, September 10 at 11:30 a.m.

I do not know a location as of yet or what his plans are, but I've speculated on them in other posts.

I'll post more details as I learn them.

**UPDATE UPDATE**

I already linked to this down in the comments, but I figured that I should bring it up here as well. The Oregonian has its usual speculation-article on whether or not the Mayor will run, using the information of a Monday announcement as the occasion to write. I do like this little tidbit, however:

That list of possible challengers includes Commissioner Sam Adams and real estate developer Bob Ball, who have expressed interest in running for mayor at some point. Others who have been mentioned as possible candidates but have so far pooh-poohed the idea publicly include Metro Council President David Bragdon, Portland lawyer and two-time City Council candidate Nick Fish, streetcar guru and former Commissioner Charlie Hales, and Roy Jay, businessman and African American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon president.

If Potter decides not to run, any or all of the above could jump into the race. Many political gossips consider Adams the favorite. If he runs for mayor, he couldn't also run for his commission seat, which is up in 2008 (along with Commissioner Randy Leonard's seat).

I do like the idea that I'm a "political gossip." Can we be the National Enquirer of Rose City politics? No, we're too young for that. We need to think of a nice, gossip-pub name, like the "Rose City Rag" or something. Oh, and their summary of people who may or may not run for Mayor is okay, too.

  • Kind of a weird day to do it, no? 9/11 anniversary? I mean, less so in Portland, but still. I don't see Potter as the type benefiting from something like that, so...

    • I think the 9/11 date is more coincidence in relation to the horrible events of September 11, 2001. According to this article at the Oregonian, the Mayor's birthday is Wednesday, September 12. The fact that the anouncement is occurring before his birthday tells me (in my faulty logic) that he wants to be rid of it before he celebrates. Certainly I wouldn't want the weightiest of weighty decisions hanging over my head during a birthday. That leads me (again with my faulty logic) to believe that he's going to retire. He can retire at peace and kick off the rest of his life (he turns 67) in style on the 12th.

Then again, it could be the other way around. After all, the opening deadline to file to run for offices is on Thursday.

      • By which I mean, YOU had your dates off!

  • I found that article fairly bland and weak, much like the Oregonian in general. There's so much more that could be written about this race. I also think it didn't give enough credit to Sam as a potential hopeful, among others.

    • Oh, I agree. I was focusing more on the little ditty about us as gossips. I was laughing for a few minutes, there.

I rarely rely on the Oregonian, but that's not their fault (well, it is, but that's a different-but-similar story). It's the same reason why I didn't really read the L.A. Times- it's probably the best "paper" West of the Mississippi, and even it's not that great (compared to the N.Y. Times). I just find online news much easier and better. Yay online!

And, I agree, I think they played down Sam. As my other post indicates, Sam's almost a shoo-in if Potter retires and he runs.
